Any of these take your fancy?

Hi there my knit-a-long friend. Here are some of the patterns I am keen to try and are big enough to keep us busy for a wee while without being too tricky. This jacket, this scarf, this nice shawl,
this wee top, and this cardigan (I saw that you have this one in your queue. I have this pattern at home. Ahem. Hint about loaning it to you. Ahem).

I (gasp!) have teaching work tomorrow! So, I will definitely shoot something for our project at 10, but won't be able to upload it until after school hours...so don't wait up : )

  1. Leaning towards the Saroyan scarf (surprised? No, it's the smallest and least daunting!). Plus I was thinking I'd like to make something for Mum's birthday in May and that looks achievable (but if I like it too much, I'll have to keep it!). I had that silk/merino sent over (yep, still not used it) - would that work on different needles?

I like the chunky knit tops, but I fear they will just make me look chunky with them... I see that Susanne in my knitting group made the little bolero cardi - like you, she is tiny so those sorts of knits look cute on her.

The Erika Knight Kelly cardigan is my lust-after project. That lovely Rowan yarn is available here in Lund.

That's so great that you have teaching work - is it relief? Hope it goes really well and that the kids are goodies. Where is it?

Ooh, almost 10am - ha, I'm still in bed!

  2. well I am keen to do the scarf...so is that a decision? Your call : )
I think that merino and silk you have should be fine (as long as it's near the weight of the wool the pattern suggests).

  3. Done deal, scarf it is.

The pattern says it could be made with any weight yarn really, so I guess it's just a matter of testing the gauge. Mine's 8 ply and the pattern calls for 10.

Since you're a teacher and all, can you please tell me what I should expect in terms of needle size - do I use bigger or smaller than recommended? Or does it not really matter and I could just add a few rows or something?

  4. I think if you are using thinner yarn you could probably go down a needle size. I'd either use the needles recommended for the wool (should be written on the ball band), or do a swatch (groan) on the pattern-recommended needles to see what kind of fabric you get. It might be fine, but I tried substituting thinner yarn for a project before and got a really loose, floppy knit which didn't suit the pattern.

If you just want to crack on and try with the 8 ply, i doubt it would be a disaster, after all it's a scarf and who really cares if it ends up slightly different in gauge to the original!

Cool, so I am going to find myself some nice wooly goodness and will let you know what I get! When do you want to start (official-like)? Monday? Now?

  5. Just read the pattern...
Id just use the wool you have, sounds like it will be fine because you just do more increase rows if it's not to your liking in size etc. Cool. Love patterns like that.

  6. Thanks for the tips. We can start whenever you're ready, seeing as I'm just going to use what I've got. Just let me know...
